I came across this article this week, about Ion Stocia, a Berkeley professor and also co-founder of Databricks (last valuation: $62B), Anyscale (last valuation: $1.3B), Conviva (last valuation: $300), and I am sure a few more. Pretty amazing stuff! 

And it is not just Ion. All the Berkeley professors are at it see below a fairly incomprehensive list. My understanding (open to be being wrong) is that faculty can and do take sabbaticals to work on companies over periods and then come back. Go professors!
