Betting Markets & the Election: Who knows who is going to win the election, but the fascinating story has been the betting markets, where the odds have been shifting significantly over the last few months. This is the first election where you are able to bet on the ballot in the U.S., and this is causing some gyrations in the odds, including the emergence of a ‘French Whale’ who has placed $30M on Trump to win. It seems to me that these markets are not very liquid, so large bets can materially move the odds over time.

Sports betting in general is relatively new to the U.S., with a Supreme Court ruling in 2018, but it has grown like wildfire. Last year, 26% of U.S. adults bet $23 billion on the Super Bowl—just for one game!
